In March of 2008, Preferred Alternatives Inc. started an innovative program to help Deaf North Carolinians to go to work, to improve the quality of their lives and to provide peer support. It began its program of providing deaf job coaches to deaf individuals, allowing for the first time, a statewide program of employment services designed exclusively to serve the deaf community.

PAI-DHH provides a full range of supported employment services, including evaluation, placement, intensive training, long term follow-up, community based assessment, and work adjustment job coaching to deaf persons referred through state agencies and through Ticket to Work. This means that any deaf person currently receiving SSI or SSDI is eligible for services.

These are not just employment services, these are services offered in the individuals’ native language, providing role modeling in language and deaf culture. Job coaches are successful deaf adults or hearing individuals with excellent signing skills and extensive backgrounds of working with the deaf community. They are able to offer support and teach how to use the individuals’ language abilities to communicate with supervisors and co-workers. The effect on the satisfaction of employment and the success of long term placement is remarkable.

Now, with services available statewide, growth continues with the high demand for these services and others like it. Coming soon are plans to expand into other states and we welcome your interest in how these services can be brought to you.

We are also developing other needed services for deaf individuals, including community based services, early intervention, transition ,mental health and others. All of these services will be offered in sign language, meaning a tremendous cost savings in terms of sign language interpreter fees.

Please contact us if you are interested in learning more.We would love to hear from you!
